Move, Groove and Improve during Richmond’s virtual Seniors Week 2020
Seniors 55+ years and their families are invited to participate in more than 13 virtual and fun activities during Seniors Week (June 1-7). The activities—found at www.richmond.ca/seniorsweek—are offered by the City, Richmond Public Library and Community Associations and Societies to ensure that seniors stay active and connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Seniors Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the contributions that are made by seniors throughout the city every day of the year,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “While Seniors Week will look a little different this year because of COVID-19, staff have been working closely alongside community partners to offer a variety of recreational and educational opportunities to keep seniors in Richmond active and connected during this unprecedented time.”
There are many creative and unique at-home and online activities planned including a Mayor’s greeting on YouTube, a Relaxation Retreat session on Zoom and a steel drum performance on Instagram.
As a virtual Seniors Week is a new concept for some seniors who may not be familiar with technology, a number of supports will be offered, including one-on-one technology assistance appointments by phoneprovided by the Richmond Public Library.
Celebration highlights include:
- Monday, June 1 at 10 a.m. – Mayor’s Greetings
Watch Mayor Malcolm Brodie on YouTube officially open Seniors Week in Richmond. This is pre-recorded and the link will be posted at www.richmond.ca/seniorsweek.
- Monday, June 1 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. – Steel Drum Performance
Kick off Seniors Week with a live performance on Instagram by a member of the Tropitonics Steel Drum Band. Relax in your favourite at-home spot and enjoy the soulful soothing sounds of the Caribbean with a variety of songs from popular oldies to current hits. All ages encouraged to watch.
- Thursday, June 4 from 11:00 to noon – Keeping Your Brain Active with Music
Learn how music can promote relaxation, ease stress, improve memory and increase energy in this Zoom class led by Richmond Addictions Services Society. Pre-registration is required.
- Friday, June 5 from 2 to 2:45 p.m. – Brain Health and Wellness in Times of Change
Connect by phone or video through Zoom for this live, fun and interactive session hosted by the Alzheimer Society of BC. Learn ways to stay active and healthy in times of change and uncertainty. A Q&A follows for participants with dementia-related questions. Pre‑registration is required.
- Saturday, June 6 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. – Over 90s Fancy Hat Challenge and Virtual Tea Party
For those 90+ years, get creative and decorate a hat with items found at home to then show off at this online Zoom party. Join Minoru Centre for Active Living staff and Board members in this fun challenge as a “cuppa” is raised to salute those 90+ years old. Email a photo of you and your fancy hat to email@example.com to be entered into a prize draw. Pre-registration is required.
- Monday, June 1 to Friday, June 5 – Virtual Scavenger Hunt
From the comfort of your own home, discover how well you know the parks, trails and paths in Richmond from random photos taken around the city. Each day, a different photo will be posted on Facebook and Instagram of an object, place, location or landmark in Richmond. Email answers to firstname.lastname@example.org and be entered into a prize draw. Winners will be contacted June 10.
