Jack O’Hare always dreamt of owning his own pub. He grew up in Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland and worked in several hotels and restaurants before he left to further his education in Switzerland. In 1967 he moved to Canada and worked his way up with CP Hotels. In 1987 he and his wife Jane became ‘purveyors of good times’ when they opened O’Hare’s, a traditional Irish pub, which fulfilled his dream and brought a slice of Ireland to Richmond.

Fast forward to 2003. Building on the success of O’Hare’s Pub, Jack O’Hare seized an opportunity to acquire a liquor store license. He took advantage of the under utilized corner of the property, and added 1,500 square feet to create O’Hare’s Liquor Store.

Jack and Jane O’Hare have now retired and enjoy travelling and spending time with their grandchildren. Their daughter, Erinn O’Hare (now Bryan), and son-in-law, Grant Bryan, carry on the legacy as they operate the family business, and build on O’Hare’s reputation.

Today the well-respected liquor store offers some of the best selections of both local and international boutique wines, beers and spirits in Metro Vancouver. They carry over 250 products that are not available in B.C. Liquor Stores. With the assistance of O’Hare’s knowledgeable staff they can help you select the perfect bottle and promise that your overall experience in the store will be one to remember.

Erinn Bryan was born and raised in Richmond and O’Hare’s Pub was always a part of her life. As a child she even lent a hand washing dishes at the pub. She moved to Ireland to study hotel management and subsequently worked in Switzerland and England. After meeting her husband, Grant Bryan, Erinn shifted to Scotland where she worked with one of the top hospitality companies in Edinburgh.

Grant Bryan graduated from Edinburgh University in hospitality management. He ran bars and restaurants before moving into a variety of senior management roles in the recruitment and training sector. The couple moved to Steveston in 2005 to start a family. With their combined experience in hotel and hospitality management it was a natural fit to join Erinn’s family’s business. For the first two years the Bryans focused on the Liquor Store and then turned their efforts to O’Hare’s Pub.  They now oversee both of the businesses.

The couple is hands on in all areas of the business and say, “there is never a dull moment in a business that is open 364 days a year.”

Grant Bryan oversees the day-to-day operation, staff management (35 in total between the two enterprises) and product selection while Erinn manages sales and marketing, kitchen operation and menu development.

Over the years O’Hare’s has responded to  the changing times by keeping ahead of industry trends without compromising their values. They tweaked the business name from ‘Pub’ to ‘GastroPub’ as an endorsement of their commitment to serving high quality food while offering great value.

Erinn and Grant Bryan have also been instrumental in driving the local Craft Beer business. They promise, “If beer is your baby, you will be blown away by the selection of both packaged and single craft beers we offer.” June 2013 marks the one-year anniversary of O’Hare’s Craft Beer Club, which already has over 100 members.

Ice-cold beer is synonymous with the great Canadian summer. O’Hare’s Liquor Store offers a walk-in beer room with every single beer chilled and ready to go. They also stock affordable wines to meet any budget.

The couple is proud to have built a loyal customer base supportive of O’Hare’s Liquor Store’s product selection, shopping environment and incredibly helpful staff.

The Bryans stay current with industry trends, which entails building relationships with both suppliers and some of the top wine producers in the country. Through these relationships they are able to offer their customers products that would normally only be available at wineries. Erinn and Grant Bryan make a great sacrifice (wink) by sampling wines and visiting the Okanagan regularly so that they may offer their customers the very best products.

Grant Bryan makes the disclaimer, “If you don’t like it, bring it back and I’ll drink it!”

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. O’Hare’s Liquor Store offers samplings of wine and beer. This is a great chance to have a taste test before you make a purchase. If you require help planning alcohol choices for a large gathering, party or wedding, the O’Hare’s staff is pleased to offer assistance. In addition, they extend a 5% discount on the purchase of six or more bottles.

The Bryans feel very fortunate that Krystle Falzetta has joined their team as Assistant Store Manager. She previously worked as a manager with Liberty Wine. An expert on both local and international wine and craft beer, Falzetta is able to recommend choices that match your desired price range and taste.  She is very approachable, and it is her goal to make both buying and sampling wine less intimidating for customers.

O’Hare’s Liquor Store is pleased to share a few of “Krystle’s picks” for the patio this summer that are not available at B.C. Liquor Stores. Blue Mountain’s Brut from Okanagan Falls, B.C. ($29.99) is a crisp, clean and delicious bubbly that is perfect for any occasion. (Note: O’Hare’s Liquor Store is the exclusive dealer of Blue Mountain Wines in Richmond).  Chateau Cailleteau Bergeron Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux, France ($19.99) is a true crowd pleaser, offering a perfect balance of fruit and acidity, making it a great wine to enjoy with local seafood, or on its own. If you are looking for a delicious red wine to enjoy with a barbeque meal, consider one of O’Hare’s top sellers, Red Tree Petite Sirah, from California ($15.99). This medium bodied wine with a punch of red fruit and soft, supple tannins is both delicious and quaffable. If you are searching for a beer which is not too heavy yet full of flavor for patio drinking, Magic Hat #9, Apricot Pale Ale from Vermont ($17.99 for a six pack) is highly recommended.

Looking back to when owning a pub was a gleam in his eye, Jack O’Hare must be very pleased with the strong foundation he laid for his business. One quarter of a century later the pub and liquor store have evolved under the management of Erinn and Grant Bryan who, with family pride and commitment, perpetuate O’Hare’s slogan ‘purveyors of good times’.
