Best BBQ North of the Border

Known for its mouth watering, finger licking Kansas City-style BBQ, Hog Shack Cook House has stood the test of time (nine years and counting) and continues to grow in popularity.

Allan Yeo (general manager) and John Lim Hing (Hog Shack’s pit master) have been friends since they met in grade 8 at McRoberts Secondary. In 2007 they purchased Corelli’s Mediterranean Grill from the original owners and operated it for a few years.

In 2010 the partners felt it was time to rebrand and introduce something unique to Steveston’s restaurant scene. They set off on a quest to Kansas City, lured to the region known for its cooked to perfection BBQ cuisine.

John says, “We wanted to be as authentic as possible to the Southern experience.”

The BBQ sauces and rubs are made in house and all meats are smoked on premise. Ribs, chicken and big cuts of meat such as brisket are smoked between six to twelve hours. Their signature Kansas City-style sweet tomato molasses BBQ sauce is applied, and then it’s time to dig in!

Hog Shack attracts a variety of meat lovers of all ages. It’s a popular spot for bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate events, weddings and it is also a terrific place to take in a sporting event.

It is common to see tables full of friends sharing their meals; the platters (more on that later) lend themselves perfectly to communal dining. In addition to the great food, Hog Shack is known for being casual, fun and kid friendly.

Craft beer is the perfect complement to the meaty menu.

You won’t find mass produced beer at Hog Shack; Allan and John take pride in offering a drink menu featuring exclusively craft beer. They were the first to do so, and they believe Hog Shack is still one of the only businesses focussing 100% on craft beer. They tap new brews every day or two. The beer panels on the wall change almost daily with six selections on tap, in addition to a range of bottled craft beers. Allan estimates over 400 different beers have come through the restaurant since the business opened. B.C. wines, cocktails and bourbon flights round out the alcohol menu.

Fancy a taste of everything? Some of the dishes that keep customers coming back for more include Johnny’s Jurassic Platter. This two-person meal features St. Louis side ribs, Dino ribs, chicken quarters, pulled pork, and a choice of four side dishes (coleslaw, yam fries, baked beans, rice pilaf, sautéed vegetables, corn bread, hand cut fries or the side of the day). For a larger crowd, Allan’s Mammoth Platter (feeds 4 and a bit) includes all of the above BBQ dishes in addition to smoked sausages and brisket and six side dishes. Hog Shack’s catfish and chips puts a southern twist on Steveston’s more traditional fish and chips; here you will find catfish deep-fried with a cornmeal crust.

If you are craving BBQ and a sweet deal on a meal, head to Hog Shack for the $11.95 Express Lunch (Monday to Friday, noon to 4:00 p.m.). The dine-in menu offers burgers, sandwiches, tacos and pastas.

People come from across the Lower Mainland and American friends travel from Blaine and Seattle to dine at Hog Shack.

Flight crews have heard of the restaurant and make a point of venturing from YVR to taste the BBQ goodness. Likewise, Americans who make a port of call in Vancouver while on an Alaskan cruise will travel to Steveston for a taste of home.

Hog Shack’s wall displays numerous ribbons John has earned in barbequing competitions. He enjoys competing on the BBQ circuit; he packs up his smokers and award winning rubs and sauces and hits the road for competitions in Las Vegas, Oregon, Alberta and B.C. John and his team proudly took top prize in 2015 at the BBQ Off the Bypass in Langley.

John and Allan take pride in offering a dining experience that you can’t find elsewhere. Allan says, “It is most rewarding getting to know regulars who have become our friends.”

John concludes, “Hearing our food is one of a kind in Vancouver and meets U.S.A. standards is feedback we love to hear.”
